Class: Second Year

No. of Students……18…………………….. Boys………12………. Girls…………6………….

Age Range…………6-7……........                               Average Age…………7…………………

No. present: 18

SECTION B (Lesson Information)
Subject: Maths

Topic: Plane Shapes

Previous Knowledge/Experience:
1.       Know the 2D shapes.
2.        Know what is a collage.
3.       Know that simple 2D shapes can be used to create compound shapes.

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
1.        Shown the different types of 2D shapes, the students will be able to recall the names and characteristics of the various 2D shapes with 100% accuracy.
2.       Presented with a collage, the students will be able to identify the shapes and characteristics of the shapes used to form the pictures with little or no error.
3.       Given an activity, the students will be able to complete the task of creating a collage using the various 2D shapes within a time frame of 10-15 minutes.

 Resources:
Ø  Bristol board
Ø  Glue
Ø  Scissors
Ø  Markers
Ø  Pre-cut 2D shapes
Ø  Chart
Ø  White board and white board markers

Description of Classroom Environment:
The classroom is well lit and aerated. There is sufficient space to conduct the activity. The desks will we arranged two desks together to facilitate the group work needed to complete this task.

Set Induction/Introduction
The students will be shown pictures of students forming shapes with their bodies, they will then in groups attempt to contour and stretch their bodies to form similar shapes.

SECTION 1
Teaching point
Recall the names and characteristics of 2D shapes.

DESCRIPTION OF TEACHING STRATEGIES
§The teacher will display the various shapes to the class and individually use questions to guide the students such as:
     1)  What is the name of this shape?
    2)   How many sides does this shape have?
    3) What is special about this shape that makes it a______?

DESCRIPTION OF PUPIL ACTIVITIES
    §  Participate in class discussion.
§The students will be asked to place their hands in a bag and feel a shape they will be given an opportunity to orally describe the shape and stick it on a chart.

SECTION 2
Teaching Point
Recognize the characteristics of a collage

       DESCRIPTION OF TEACHING STRATEGIES
§The teacher will show the picture of a collage and identify the concept of a collage.
§A collage is a piece of art made by sticking various 2D shapes and pieces of paper on to a backing.
§The teacher will then ask the students to describe the features of a collage.
§Can you see the shapes within the picture?
     1)  What are some of them?
     2) Look carefully at the house. What are the shapes used to make the house? Or tree? Or sun?
     3) Does the shape(s) used in the picture correctly take the figure of a tree? Or sun? Or house?
     4) What would happen if we were to use the shape of a circle to form the shape of the house, will we have the                        correct shape?
    5) If we were to use the shape of a square will we correctly have the shape of a sun?

 DESCRIPTION OF PUPIL ACTIVITIES
§The students will be free to ask questions.
1)  What is a collage, as well as what is required to complete a collage.

SECTION  3
Teaching Point
Illustrate a collage.

   DESCRIPTION OF TEACHING STRATEGIES
§  The teacher will distribute the resources of Bristol board, glue, and pre-cut shapes.
§ The teacher will use Bristol board sheets and the pre-cut shapes and allow students to create the collage as a group.
§ The teacher will guide the students so that the activity resembles that of completing a puzzle.
1)Which shapes did we use to make the house? Or tree? Or sun

DESCRIPTION OF PUPIL ACTIVITIES
§The students will be placed into groups.
§The students will choose the shapes required to construct the collage.
§The students will construct their collage as a team using their chosen shapes.

SECTION D (Summary/closure and Assessment)
Closure:
A verbal discussion will be used to reiterate the content taught during the lesson and a display of the collages. The teacher will also require the students to list some of the shapes that can be used to create a picture of a house, a tree, and a sun.

Assessment:
An individual activity of creating a collage appropriately using 2D shapes to create a picture of a house, tree and sun. Additionally, a checklist will be utilized to identify if the criteria of creating a collage using 2D shapes was met.

Checklist of Activity
Students used shapes appropriately,                                               Yes  (  )             No (  )
i.e. they used a square/rectangle for the main house, circle for the sun

Students coloured the house/sun/tree using appropriate colours      Yes  (  )             No (  )
i.e. the sun is yellow the tree is green

Students applied their own creativity to the collage adding flowers. Etc.  Yes  (  )             No (  )

Students worked cooperatively in groups                                             Yes  (  )             No (  )

Review key points: What are the plane shapes?                                    Yes  (  )             No (  )
How many sides does each have?
                                                  What is a collage?

Lesson Appraisal/ reflection:
Preparing for this presentation of a lesson was quite an interesting task throughout this course. Lesson planning was the first aspect we had to master before even thinking about how we were going about to teach this lesson. When it comes to lesson planning I was quite skeptical about it due to the fact that it was new to me. It was sort of difficult trying to decide what topic, subject and class to go with seeing that it had so much to choose from but we wanted to go with something we would be able to maneuver easily.
At first we decided to go with a Visual and Performing Arts topic Collages but then realized that the lesson was more based on the Mathematics lesson, Plane Shapes. This decision was made late and left us all sort of unprepared. Before, when the topic was collages our teaching points were separated into three allowing each of us to present on each of the teaching points. The lesson plan was changed in terms of the set induction and the flow of our teaching points and this led me off track. When writing the objectives we considered the ABCD objectives to make them specific and Bloom’s Taxonomy, which we also incorporated into developing our teaching points. Deciding on a set induction was challenging because throughout the course our instructor continuously emphasized on creating interesting and interactive set inductions.
At first we decided that we could ask the students to form their bodies into a shape but after we mentioned it to miss, she gave us another idea where we could have them use their bodies to make shapes and we can take pictures and reiterate it back to them and ask them questions and so we agreed to going along with this one. On the day of the presentation we were very unrehearsed especially after seeing the other groups present. Some things were added on the day that I did not knew of, like for example the set induction included what we was going with as well as this new idea of putting the shapes into a bag and having the students feel it and describe what they felt. After doing this it had cut outs of what the students were describing and the names of the shapes in which was stuck onto the board for viewing purposes for them to learn. Now when I realized what it was going to be used for I was thinking that it was too small for a display, which was mentioned in miss’s critique.
Based on what I believed went well was just the actual activity of the lesson because it was when the students were able to freely design their own home environment using the plane shapes. There are a lot of things I would have done differently especially meeting with members and preparing everything together. Most of our presentation fell apart because of the recent changes day/s before, my focus was on teaching point three where most of it was just reiterating the previous information to the students guiding them along while they were creating their collage, however the way the presentation went along my part seemed impossible to do and so I hindered and because I’m not spontaneous, I am not the person who could just make things up on the spot. This to me is one of my biggest drawback after being shy about public speaking, if I could’ve just make up stuff on the spot I would’ve and it would have made a difference even for my benefit. One thing I enjoyed is when the students were designing their collages and how interested they looked in making it.
The next time presenting a lesson I will consider and make sure I encourage my members to meet and prepare the lesson properly, I’ll try to work on my shyness and public speaking and be able to think and make ideas on the spot because every teacher should have this skill. All in all I think the presentation was done fairly well and I look forward to using this as a learning experience to do better on my next attempt.
